Luxury vinyl flooring is five times thicker than the original product and should measure 8-mm to 12-mm in density. It also is layered and, at the top, has a clear, strong melamine wear coating that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs; the wear layer has a separate measurement and, for heavily trafficked areas, the best is 20-mils.

On top of that is a urethane finish that adds extra shine and protection. It should also be mentioned here that LVF is waterproof from top to bottom, submerged, or spilled on without consequence.
